Iron ore has been mined at Eisenerz since AD 712, thus creating an impressive stepped pyramid, the Erzberg: a man-made open-cast mine overlooking the town with its pink and ochre-tone mass. The disused facilities are open to the public. The pleasant old town still retains many old houses dating from the 16C to the 18C, but only a few Radmeisterhöfe, former ironmaster residences, are still standing.
