Freistadt has preserved its massive ramparts, built around 1300 and 1400, its towers and fortified gates. Its Hauptplatz is lined with houses painted in pastel shades and fronted by porches or arcades. But, the Italian Renaissance-style former Rathaus remains its most spectacular building. Nearby, the carved fountain is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The Baroque tower that strikes the eye, topped by an onion-shaped dome and a small lantern, belongs to the Stadtpfarrkirche church.
