The spruce main square, decked with flowers and fine trees, adorned with its Virgin Mary Column and lined with colourful houses, gives few hints of the town's troubled past. It suffered serious fires in 1528 and 1559 and flooding from the Mur in 1537, 1569 and 1572. Finally in 1763, lightning struck and ignited a blaze which left hardly a single house intact.
