Gmunden, popular with Romantic or "Biedermeier" artists and poets, offers charmed visitors a really colourful little town, with one of the best equipped lake beaches in Austria, on the north slope of the Alps. In Summer, lake cruises as far as the Ebensee can be made on the restored paddle steamer Cisela, which welcomed Emperor Franz Joseph aboard in 1872. Gmunden specializes in artistic pottery since the 15C.
