Lying between Velden and Klagenfurt, the 17km-long lake receives limited inflow from watercourses, resulting in high summer water temperatures (24 to 28°C) which have encouraged the development of resorts at Velden and Pörtschach. A series of hills obscure the Karawanken chain, but a 15min walk southwards is sufficient to bring its peaks into view.
