The new cathedral, built from 1862 to 1924, is the largest church in Austria and can host a congregation of 20 000 people. The only constraint imposed on the architect Vinzenz Statz was symbolic: that the spire should not be taller than that of St Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna. The latter thus exceeds the new cathedral's 134m-spire by 3 m. Also note the fine stained-glass windows.
