Mauthausen is full of provincial charm, with its houses huddled down to the banks of the Danube. On the market place (Markplatz), an old fountain, shaded by plane trees, stands near the Church of St Nicholas. This peaceful little town's other sights are an early-13C Romanesque ossuary and Pragstein Castle, which houses the local museum. However, in 1938, after the Anschluss, a Concentration Camp made Mauthausen a famous sinister name.
