Like neighbouring squares, Residence Square was built according to the Italian style that the fastuous Wolf Dietrich liked so much. It is part of the great town planning operation in which the cathedral and prince-bishops' residence were erected. At the centre, water from a great 17 th-century fountain cascades down onto groups of horses, tritons and atlantes. On the east, is the Glockenspiel, a belfry whose set of 35 bells chimes famous operatic arias.
