Schärding : Michelin's recommendations
Since the Middle Ages, Schärding's favourable position on the Inn allowed trade to flourish in salt, wood, tuff, marble and even wine, and it received its own charter in 1316. Schärding belonged to the Wittelsbach family, who built a castle here, of which only the gateway remains. It became an Austrian town in the 18C. It is worth strolling round this pretty little town, whose Stadtplatz, features the Silberzeile, a row of colourful houses built by former wealthy merchants.
