Visitors crossing the Wachau would hardly suspect the presence of the little town of Spitz, hidden behind a curtain of fruit trees and lying at the foot of terraced vineyards. Only the squat shape of the church rises above the roofs, while the ruins of Hinterhaus Castle stand out from the wooded mountain slope. Spitz has retained old arcaded houses, with balconies. The Schlossgasse leading to the 17C castle is one of its most picturesque streets.
