Tradition has it that the Church of St Rupert was founded in 740 by St Virgil, the Bishop of Salzburg, in the early days of the Christianisation of Central Europe. This being said, the Romanesque nave and tower date from the 12C and the chancel and portal from the 2nd third of the 13C. The church was completed in the early 15C. Its stained-glass windows are modern. Rupertskirche is now the French parish church in Vienna.
