When he returned to Vienna in 1793, Haydn bought this house which particularly appealed to his wife, situated in a new district. He lived there for many years and composed two of his greatest oratorios there, The Creation in1798 and The Seasons in 1801. The museum, created in 1899, also commemorates Brahms who moved to Vienna in 1869 where he lived until his death in 1897.
