In the 13C, Jews were given permission to settle in Vienna, acquire property and engage in trade. They built a synagogue, school, hospital and baths on or near this square. However, the relief and inscription of the façade of the «Haus zum grossen Jordan» is a reminder of their brutal expulsion on 12 March 1421: at that time, Christianity was feeling threatened by the Great Schism and Hussite heresy although the Jews were in no way responsible for this situation.
