From 1919 to 1934, Vienna had a socialist city council which embarked on a vast programme to build large housing complexes, called «Höfe». The triumphant arches of the Karl-Marx-Hof, between the courtyard and gardens, surmounted by large sculptures, with its red and ochre façades and social equipment is the best example of an urban development, a sort of working-class Ring style, which sought to treat the working class with as much consideration as other social classes.
