Now principally a pedestrian precinct, the street has many shops, cafés and restaurants, with a perpetual throng of passers-by entertained by street musicians and singers. The American Bar, tucked away in a small alley is worth a look. This tiny Art Deco gem, once the haunt of the painter Kokoschka, was created by Alfred Loos in 1908. Further down, beyond the Church of the Knights of Malta, is the Esterhàzy Palace, its Rococo façade overlooking the street.
