It is easy to imagine the outcry caused by the eclectic style of the Looshaus, built in 1911 opposite the Hofburg. The clean lines of its functional modern architecture were particularly offensive to Emperor Franz-Josef who insisted on keeping the curtains drawn on this side of the Palace. The fine green marble and coolly elegant columns now fit perfectly into the surroundings.
