The vast Maria-Theresien-Platz stands between two gigantic, symmetrical buildings, the Kunsthistorisches Museum and its twin, the Naturhistorisches Museum. This formal square which, with the Neue Burg, was part of the project to build an imperial forum dedicated to Arts and Science, is embellished with the Maria-Theresien Denkmal, a 20m-high monument in memory of the famous Empress.
