Villach, owing to its international railway junction, is Austria's gateway to the south. It was already busy in Antiquity, then was tied to the Bavarian bishopric of Bamberg for seven centuries, before being purchased by Maria Theresa in 1759. The pleasant old town includes the 12C Hauptplatz street-square, surrounded by a number of houses with fine arcaded courtyards. Villach is Carinthia's economic and cultural hub and holds a music festival, the Carinthischer Sommer every summer.
