Abbey Interesting : Michelin's recommendations

Bibendum
Millstatt, with the peaks of the Kreuzeck and Reisseck in the background, lies on the shore of Lake Millstatt, whose water temperature reaches 26°C in Summer. Its southern climate makes it a popular holiday resort. Each year, from May to October, Millstatt hosts the International Music Weeks. Its abbey* whose Stiftsmuseum gives a general idea of its turbulent past and rich religious and secular art, boasts magnificent Romanesque reliefs. The courtyard*, hosting a huge thousand-year-old lime tree, offers elegant 16C architecture with its Italianate arcades. The early-12C cloister* has retained its Romanesque blind arcades with slim marble columns whose square capitals* are decorated with animals or symbolic plants. In the east gallery, which has the most numerous openwork designs, visitors undoubtedly favour the dwarf and lion each supporting a slim column. They cannot miss the magnificent abbey church marble Romanesque door**. The interior owes its network vaulting, with emblazoned keystones, to the Knights of St George and the sumptuous Baroque furnishings to the Jesuits, notably the 17C high altar* and Rococo pulpit. Some frescoes, such as the Last Judgment (1515) on the south wall, are older, as are the 16C red-marble tombstones of the grand masters of the Order of St George Johann Siebenhirter and Johann Geumann.
