Schallaburg Castle has substantial Romanesque remains and a Gothic chapel, but its great 16C Renaissance arcaded courtyard makes the most striking impression, with its abundant terracotta ornamentation of statues, caryatids or low reliefs, as if a Roman mansion had been magically moved to this Alpine land. Today, the castle is a regional cultural centre for Lower Austria and hosts prestigious exhibitions every summer.
