This valley runs from south to north for around 60km from the Italian frontier to the Inn Valley. Its broad lower section is a moderately mountainous and easily accessible landscape. Above Mayrhofen it splits into four enclosed valleys (the Tuxertal, Zemmtal, Stilluppgrund and Zillergrund), halted to the south by the huge crystalline massif of the Zillertal Alps, a chain with imposing glaciers dominated by the Hochfeiler (3 150m) and the Großer Möseler (3 479m).
