The native land of the Samogitians, a group particularly attached to their traditions, the Zemaitija national park extends around the extensive calm waters of Lake Plateliu. Forestry predominates here (9 700ha); visitors exploring the region should not miss the village of Zemaiciu Kalvarija. A little further on, Plateliai has the park’s information centre, worth seeking out in order to better understand the full delights of this northwestern region of the country.
