This 16C gate leading onto the Minsk road is the only one to survive of the nine that once served the capital. It has two very different faces; its sober external façade is surmounted by Vytis, a white knight and two griffons, the emblem of Lithuania. On the north side, a window reveals the luminous miraculous icon of the Virgin, painted in 1620 on oak panels. Housed in the chapel of the Virgin Mary, the black-faced Madonna of Vilnius is represented without the Child in a habit of silver gilt.
