Andenne grew around a monastery founded in about 690 by St Begga, Charlemagne's great-great-grandmother. The Cow War began in Andenne, after one of the Count of Namur's serfs had stolen a cow from a wealthy citizen of Ciney. This fairly trivial incident led to a two-year long local war !
