Wijk Zurenborg : Michelin's recommendations
This exceptional district is made up of several streets running around the Cogels-Osylei. It is named after a 16C park. A marvel of the 19C, Wijk Zurenborg includes neo, eclectic and Art Nouveau private houses that were the work of famous architects such as J Bascourt, E Dieltiens, F Smet-Verhas and J Hofman. Some buildings in Wijk Zurenborg are real palaces and your walk will be an interesting journey through civilian architecture of the period. For example, on Cogels-Osylei Avenue, the houses at 32-36 (by Dieltiens), the three Flemish neo-Renaissance houses at 25-29 (from Bascourt) and the "Sunflower House" ("Huize Zonnebloem") by Hofman, with its remarikable sinuous design. The private house at 80 is nearly a copy of the house of the painter of St Cyr in Brussels. In a more sobre style, the four houses on the corner (Generaal Van Merlenstraat and Waterloostraat) illustrate the four seasons. At 11, Waterloostraat, you can see the house of "The Battle of Waterloo", by F Smet-Verhas, devoted to Napoléon's last battle at the gates of Brussels. Here, you will see portraits of the Emperor and Wellington, a great bow window and a corner tower.
