Ath, at the confluence of the eastern and western Dender, occupies a strategic position. Thus, it was besieged by Louis XIV in 1667, then Vauban built his first fortifications here, which were mostly destroyed when the French laid siege to the town again in 1745. This farming and cattle breeding area has a landscape of wide horizons, punctuated with rows of poplars, large farms or hamlets.
