Beaumont : Michelin's recommendations
The small, old hillside town of Beaumont lies at a crossroads commanding the entrance to the "Hainaut boot". According to legend, three tramps from Auvergne were hanged here in 1549, after having forced a rider to carry their bags, who turned out to be Charles V on a visit to the Low Countries. Beaumont boasts delicious macaroons, made from a recipe left by one of Napoleon's chefs when the Emperor stayed here on his way to Waterloo, in June 1815.
