A Meuse tributary, the Semois rises near Arlon, flows through lowlying “Belgian Lorraine” and then beyond Florenville meanders through the schist of the Ardennes massif with fine views along its course, notably at Herbeumont where stands the Tombeau du Chevalier, a long spur round which the river winds in a lovely landscape. At Botassart, a viewpoint looks towards the long bosky hill of the Tombeau du Géant. Beyond Membre, there is a view of the Jambon de la Semois, another narrow wooded spur.
