Between Notre Dame de la Chapelle and the Hal gate, this was traditionally a poor working district with its share of social problems. Here, it is said, the true Brussels inhabitants still live, but this is a rare breed; the zwanzeur spirit (cocky yet charming) has all but deserted the taverns. Les Marolles, however, retains a convivial and populist allure, and not just around its flea market.
