Dendermonde, meaning "mouth of the Dender", is strategically placed at the confluence of the Dender and Escaut rivers. In 1667, Louis XIV was forced to abandon his siege of the town when its inhabitants flooded it. Dendermonde suffered badly after the fall of Antwerp in 1914.
