Diest, set in a bend of the River Demer, is a peaceful town with partly-preserved ramparts. It was once a stronghold of the House of Orange, whose most famous member was William of Nassau, leader of the United Provinces revolt against Spain. He also founded the Orange-Nassau dynasty to which Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands belongs. St Jan Berchmans, patron saint of pupils, was born in the street bearing his name in 1599 and died here in 1621.
