The museum is housed in the cottages and late-Gothic chapel of the 14C Almshouse. Note the inner courtyard lined with white houses and their tall dormer windows. The museum illustrates Flemish popular arts and traditions, notably via reconstructed shops, interiors and craftsmen's workshops c 1900. Under the eaves, there is a puppet theatre with traditional Ghent figures.
