The 4 200-ha Réserve Naturelle Domaniale des Hautes Fagnes was created in 1957 to protect local fauna, flora, soil and landscape. Most peat bogs lie within its boundaries. Though the plateau is not very high, its harsh climate enables the spread or breeding of mountain and boreal plants and animals.
