Aulne Abbey's imposing ruins lie at the end of the green Sambre valley. This monastery, nestling among alders, was founded by St Landelin in the 7C and was a daughter-house of Lobbes Abbey. A Cistercian community from Clairvaux settled here in 1147. The abbey was burned down in 1794, then restored to house the Herset Hospice (1896), named after its founder , who was also Aulne's last abbot.
