German soldiers who fell in Belgium during the Second World War or died in eastern Germany and some from the First World War lie in this enclosure. A 6m-high basalt calvary tops the crypt in front of the cemetery. Almost 20 000 crosses (one cross for every two graves) are lined up on a carpet of heather dotted with pines and birches and separated by grass paths.
