    The church of this town, where Ernest Claes was born, houses a fine 16C triptych depicting the life of its patron St Eustace. Note Belgium's oldest stained-glass window (1397) over the high-altar.

    These buildings were burned down in 1942, except for the cloister, chapter-house and sacristy adorned with fine 18C woodwork. Note the interesting portraits of abbots since the 17C in the cloister and a De Crayer painting in the chapter-house.

    Note the tomb of the 20C Flemish author Ernest Claes and his wife. He was born in Zichem and was especially fond of Averbode Abbey.
