This town near the Lys has magnificent villas, but its name evokes above all the artists G. Van de Woestijne, Van den Abeele and Vallérius De Saedeleer, who at the end of the 19C formed a group around the sculptor G. Minne. After the war, their research led to the marked Expressionism of the second group of artists, whose main members were A. Servaes (founder), C. Permeke and G. De Smet.
