Tongres, the seat of Ambiorix, chief of the Eburones, is along with Tournai one of Belgium’s oldest settlements and one of the richest in archaeological terms. Designed by De Gregorio & Partners, the museum has rich collections from prehistory to the Middle Ages: a curious Gallo-Roman dodecahedron, Merovingian grave goods, pottery, statues, glass, coins and jewellery from the Gallo-Roman era. The main attractions are a huge statue of Jupiter and a bronze oil vessel representing a young Nubian.
