Tournai
: Michelin's recommendations
Tournai, overlooked by its cathedral towers, is divided in two by the banks of the Escaut and lies at the heart of a farming area. Together with Tongeren, Tournai is Belgium's oldest town. It enjoyed a prestigious past and was an important artistic centre. Sadly, the May 1940 bombings destroyed many old houses. Guided boat trips on the Escaut are available and day trips also enable visitors to see the surrounding area.
