This bridge is a reminder of military architecture. It was part of the second set of ramparts built in the 13C to defend the town entrance from the River Escaut. The next bridge (boulevard Delwart) offers a fine view of the rounded sides of its towers (flat on the town side) and the cathedral's outline in the distance. In 1948, the bridge was raised 2.4m to ease access for river traffic.
