Zeebrugge is the only Belgian deep-water coastal port. It was inaugurated in 1907 and linked to Bruges by the Baudoin Canal. It was used as a U-boat base by the Germans in the First World War and was made famous by the English operation which blocked the canal and made the harbour unusable during the night of 22-23 April 1918. Zeebrugge is also a pleasant seaside resort with a small marina.
