Two large dams and their reservoirs were built in this area to supply the River Sambre and Charleroi Canal: the vast Eau d'Heure rip-rap dam and Plate-Taille dam with a hydro-electric plant. The three fore-dams of Féronval, Ry-Jaune and Falempris were also built to make the projects easier to carry out and have enabled to create a new road network. An extensive tourist development programme is in progress.
