The Sûre Valley (Sauertal)
The Sûre Valley (Sauertal)
By car, 25 km, 1 dayWith its striking landscapes at every twist in the road and magnificent vistas over the Upper Valley, this hiker's paradise is also a wonderful place to enjoy nature while on a drive. From its rocky spurs at Grenglay to its verdant hills, the Oesling massif has a very romantic feeling. Could it be due to the picturesque Medieval schist ruins at Esch-sur-Sûre and Bourscheid? Just follow the meandering Sûre, a tributary of the Moselle River, to find out.

Esch-sur-Sûre
From the watch-tower situated at the top of the hill, you have an interesting view over the site, with the keep and chapel of the castle in the foreground. It was built in the 10C and demolished in 1795 Some relics of its medieval perimeter wall have survived.
This tall 48m dam has a 62 millions m 3 water capacity. It includes a hydro-electric plant and is completed by two secondary dams, one in Bavigne and the one in Pont-Misère, designed to regulate rises in river water-levels . From the Kaundorf road, on a bend 800metres past the dam, you have a beautiful view over the lake.
The brown schist ruins of this castle stand 155m above the river Sure. The 11C keep and Gothic fireplace of the upper castle remain intact. The 14C lower castle was remodelled many times and includes Stolzembourg house and its museum of archaeology (pottery and architectural fragments found within the castle). From the perimeter towers, you have beautiful views over the surrounding valley and plateau.
At the top of this steep impressive slope, a belvedere provides a wonderful view over Bourscheid castle, perched on a long promontory flanked by a meander of the river Sure.
