Hugo wrote about this fortified castle (12-16C), which jumps out at you on a bend in the forest, at the bottom of a ravine. It is an unforgettable sight. The old castle is an enormous tower-keep attached to a fortress. During restoration work in 1930, its sides were removed and its entrances strengthened. The neighbouring castle was built in 1647 by the Lord of Beaufort. The footpath that begins to the west of the pond leads to a river.
