Congonhas : Michelin's recommendations

This is the crowning achievement of Aleijadinhodu, the absolute master of Brazilian Baroque and among the most illustrious artists of his time. The sanctuary of Bom Jesus de Matosinhos (18C), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of a kind. Perched on the summit of the Morro do Maranhão that dominates Congonhas, the site also encompasses a church, the area in front of which is decorated with statues, and six chapels containing sculptures of the Passion of Christ. Although the city does not hold much interest, the sanctuary is well worth the detour.
