A craft market and two museums now occupy the galleries of this colonial-style former prison (1866). The interesting Museu de Arte e Cultura Popular exhibits some 1 500 sculptures (wood, terracotta and woodcut) where the religious fervour of the inhabitants of the sertão is given free expression. Three messianic and revolutionary figures are often depicted: Padre Cícero, Ceará-born Antônio Conselheiro, spiritual leader of the Canudos community, and Lampião, a Brazilian Robin Hood who attacked wealthy landowners and became a figurehead for peasant revolt.
