As with any waterside town, you need to head to the port in order to decipher the spirit of Manaus. It has the peculiarity of being a floating port. Built by the British in 1903, its quays adjust to water levels, which can vary by up to 10m between the dry and rainy seasons. Take the time to observe the continuous comings and goings of workers loading the rows of brightly-coloured wooden boats.
