Building a replica of Paris' Opera Garnier in the middle of the Amazon: such was the extent of the rubber barons' ideas of grandeur! When it was inaugurated in 1896, the Teatro Amazonas became the symbol of the town, and a highly visible one at that, with a pink façade and cupola composed of 36 000 varnished tiles depicting the Brazilian flag.
