Petrópolis, named "City of Peter" in honour of Emperor Pedro I of Brazil, was the summer residence of his son, then of the aristocrats of the court. Thanks to its enviable location at a high altitude, it enjoys much more clement summer temperatures than the capital, and thus attracts droves of Cariocas in search of cool climes.
