The Avenida Koeler, which links the park of Praça da Liberdade and the cathedral, runs alongside a little tree-lined canal. Imperial Petrópolis's smartest street is lined with elegant residences including the Pálacio da Princesa Isabel (to this day the property of the imperial family) and the Rio Negro Palace (1889), the summer residence of the presidents of Brazil up until 1960.
